Computer Training Opportunities
Seebeck Computer Center provides a variety of computer training
courses in conjunction with Human Resource Development (formerly
Staff Training and Development). Whether you need instruction in
basic computer skills or more specialized computer applications,
you should be able to find a class that fits your needs.
The typical learning track begins with training in PC and file
concepts, Web browsing, and e-mail. These classes are designed for
computer beginners as well as intermediate-level users. Most people
then go on to take the Microsoft Windows and Office e-Courses, computer-based
training programs that allow you to learn at your own pace. (A proctor
is present to assist you.) After the completion of an e-Course,
you will take a computer-based e-Test to ensure that you are ready
for the intermediate level class.
Intermediate classes are offered in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
and Access. These courses are instructor led and project based.
E-Test certifications in both Windows and the program being taught
are required to make sure that all students benefit from the course
material.
Specialized topics offered include desktop publishing in PageMaker;
using the University's central calendar system (see the calendar
story "Take Charge of Your Schedule"
on page four); and a two-class series on Web publishing. Prerequisites,
if any, vary by class.
Almost all computer classes are taught in the Office of Information
Technology's training lab, which is equipped with 15 PCs (one of
which is connected to a projector system) and two iMacs. Please
note that while Macintosh products can be used for most of the instructor-led
courses, Macintosh users are still asked to fulfill the Microsoft
Windows e-Test prerequisites to ensure that they can understand
Windows-based instruction.
Human Resource Development publishes a calendar every semester
listing the courses that will be offered. The current listing can
also be found on their Web site at bama.ua.edu/~hr/st-dev.
