Your Students May Be Talking About: ResNet
ResNet is The University of Alabama's Residential Hall Network.
It gives students living in some residence halls the opportunity
to connect their personal computers to the campus Ethernet network.
A student participating in ResNet has a high-speed Internet connection
on demand without tying up the phone line. That Internet connection
can be used to access University resources, like e-mail, the libraries,
and course information, as well as the other resources of the World
Wide Web.
As of fall 2000, the following residence halls are connected to
ResNet: Blount, Burke West, Byrd, Friedman, New, Paty, Parham, Rose
Towers, and Tutwiler. Wiring in Parker Adams Hall is scheduled for
completion during the fall 2000 semester. By mid-September, over
1200 students had already signed up for ResNet service.
For more information about ResNet, visit its Web site at ResNet.ua.edu.
Students living in residence halls not connected to ResNet may
obtain high-speed Internet access from Comcast@Home's cable
modem service. Please visit the Comcast@Home Web site at www.comcastonline.com
for more information.
ResNet and cable modem service are much faster than dialup Internet
access and do not tie up phone lines. Those living off-campus may
be able to obtain high-speed Internet access through a Comcast@Home
cable modem or through DSL service, offered by BellSouth or dbTechnology.
For more information about high-speed or dialup Internet access,
please see the article "Getting
on the Net at Home" on page five.
