The University of Alabama Office of Information Technology Fall 2000

Your bama Account Space

Just like your personal computer, bama.ua.edu has a set amount of disk space. Even though it has much more space than your computer, and more was installed this semester (see "Coming Soon..." on page one), it can still get filled up. In order to make sure that there will be enough room for academic work, there is a disk space quota system in place.

Each account is created with a particular space limit. For student accounts this limit is 10 MB, while faculty, staff, organization, and departmental accounts have an initial quota of 15 MB. This space can be used for e-mail, publishing a Web site, or other Unix applications.

To find out how much space your bama account is using, go to the Web site bamamail.ua.edu and click on "Check account space" under "Tools." Enter your username and password in the spaces provided and click the "Show Quota" button. For security reasons, you can only check your account space from a computer on the campus network.

There are times when the initial space limit is not sufficient for an account holder's needs. Quotas will be increased to support University-related work. To have the quota increased on a faculty, staff, organization, or departmental account, simply call the HelpDesk at 348-2435. Students requiring extra space on their accounts should bring a letter from a professor stating the reason for the additional space requirement to the HelpDesk. If you are teaching a class that will require all of your students to have additional disk space, please contact the HelpDesk to make arrangements.

If you are having your students work in teams on projects that require space on bama.ua.edu, you should considered setting up individual "team" accounts on bama. These group accounts eliminate the need for students to use their own disk space on multi-person assignments. In addition, this prevents students from needing to "share" personal passwords, a serious security issue. Professors who are working together to create Web sites for a course might want to consider getting a departmental course account. Again, this eliminates the need to share space. For more information about either type of account, call the HelpDesk at 348-2435.
