What is Internet2?
Internet2 (I2) is a not-for-profit consortium of 170 plus universities
and over 60 companies dedicated to developing the potential of the
Internet. The consortium partners educational institutions, industry
leaders, and government agencies to foster research and application
of advanced networking technologies. Together they will develop
the next generation of the Internet.
A major component of Internet2 is the organizations and networks
that serve to provide high-speed connections to their members. The
University of Alabama is a founding member of the Gulf Central GigaPoP,
an organization within The University of Alabama System that provides
connections from its members to I2 and other high-speed networks.
Internet2 traffic from the University also travels through the Southeastern
Universities Research Association (SURA) Southern Crossroads (SoX)
in Atlanta. From SoX, traffic is routed to one of the two major
Internet2 networks, Abilene or the vBNS. Which network to use is
automatically determined according to the destination.
For more information about the Internet2 project and The University
of Alabama's connection to the high-speed network, see www.internet2.edu
and internet2.ua.edu.
