E-mail addresses can be kind of cryptic. Students' accounts on campus systems usually have numbers at the end, and it is hard to remember which e-mail systems use first initials and which just use last names, or how much of the last names are included. The last thing you want is to miss an important e-mail message because the sender was confused about your address.

A simple answer to this problem is to use an e-mail alias. This address should be easy for your correspondents to remember, and they won't have to know which department you're in or how that network is set up. All they'll need to know is your first name, your last name, and that you're with the University. (In case of duplicates, your alias may have to use your middle initial or name as well.)

To get your e-mail alias, get an account on bama.ua.edu. If you want, you can use this account for all of your e-mail; it is very flexible and can be accessed using a mail program like Netscape Messenger or Microsoft Outlook. You can also use BamaMail with your bama account to read and send e-mail from a Web page. No matter where you are, as long as you can find a computer connected to the Internet, you can check your mail. This can be particularly useful if you travel a lot.

However, if you don't want to change mail systems just to use your new e-mail alias, you don't have to. Simply forward your bama.ua.edu mail to your existing e-mail account. You can then tell people to send mail to your firstname.lastname@ua.edu e-mail address and receive it just like all of your other mail.

To get a bama.ua.edu account:

  1. Bring your ACTion card to the HelpDesk in A-203 Gordon Palmer Hall.
  2. Fill out a short form indicating your desired username and e-mail alias.
  3. Wait a few minutes for your account to be created and an account information sheet to print.

To recover a forgotten bama.ua.edu account name or password:

  1. Bring your ACTion card to the HelpDesk in A-203 Gordon Palmer Hall.
  2. Swipe your ACTion card through the reader on the counter.
  3. Wait a minute for a new account sheet to print.

To forward your bama.ua.edu mail to your existing account:

  1. From a computer on the campus network, go to the Web site bamamail.ua.edu.
  2. Under "Tools," choose "Set up automatic mail forwarding."
  3. Follow the instructions, making sure to type your forwarding address correctly and choosing not to leave a copy of e-mail on bama. (Leaving a copy can cause your disk space to fill up and eventually block mail from being forwarded.)
