The New AMELIA

In July, the University Library system moved its AMELIA catalog services from the IBM mainframe to a new web-accessible UNIX platform. To check the new AMELIA on-line catalog from your office or home, point your favorite web browser to http://amelia.ua.edu and select Local Catalog. From there, you can search by Author, Title, Subject, etc., or click on the Keyword button and search the catalog by keyword. If you experience any problems with this search, or need more information about using the new on-line catalog, visit one of the University Libraries. The workstations in the various libraries use a Windows client, which is a little different from the web-based client, but the information is the same. Note that the tn3270 client you used last year to access the mainframe-based library system cannot be used to access the new AMELIA.

Phasing Out UA1VM - The Next Steps

Here is the schedule of things that will be happening on UA1VM this fall. For more complete information on UA1VM migration, see the migration Web page. (Editor's note: The migration web site was removed during the fall 1999 semester.) Note: If you are new to the University, you do not have an account on UA1VM, and most of these migration changes will not affect you.

September 7, 1998 - Last day to use the old, slow modems attached to 348-4547. If you are using the YTERM program for dialup, you are probably using these modems, and you will be affected by this change. In that case, you should look at your alternatives, such as moving to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The University's recommended ISP is Simple Communications, 750-0850. (Note that September 7 is a University holiday and the Helpdesk will be closed.)

September 20, 1998 - Last day to access the Gopher server on UA1VM. Gopher services generally have been replaced by web services. If you still use the Gopher server to access information, you should check the University web page at http://www.ua.edu for current access to that information.

October 4, 1998 - Last day to access the POP mail server on UA1VM. If you use Netscape or Internet Explorer or another POP client to read your e-mail from UA1VM, you should obtain an account on bama.ua.edu, forward your UA1VM mail to your new account, and change your mail client to point to your new account. Bama.ua.edu is also an IMAP server. IMAP service allows you to store your mail on bama.ua.edu, which can be useful if you read mail from more than one PC. (POP service moves your mail to the PC you are using at the time, which can get confusing if you sometimes read mail from home and sometimes from campus.) After October 4, if you are still reading mail on UA1VM, you will have to log on to UA1VM and use the MAIL program to read your mail.

October 12, 1998 - Unused accounts on UA1VM will be deleted. This will include all accounts that have shown no file activity since creation (including accounts that may have been used for dialup authentication or POP mail but not logged on.)

During Fall 1998 - department heads will be asked to verify faculty/staff accounts on UA1VM. Accounts that cannot be verified as belonging to current or retired faculty and staff will be deleted. If you have changed departments or employment status since your UA1VM account was created and you have not completed your move off of UA1VM, you may send e-mail to Help.Desk@mail.ua.edu to verify the department in which your account is authorized.

During Fall 1998 - The LISTSERV server will move from UA1VM to bama.ua.edu, and current valid mailing lists will be moved. Notice of this change has already been sent to all list owners. This server change means the address of each list will change from listname@UA1VM.UA.EDU to listname@bama.ua.edu. List owners will be responsible for notifying their list members of the address change and the actual date of the list move, once that date is determined. You will be contacted about the move date for your list. If you are a list owner, you should already have moved your own e-mail address off of UA1VM.

During Fall 1998 - If you are planning a fall class in which you expect your students to use a computer account, remember that students will have accounts on bama.ua.edu, not on UA1VM. If your class will use standard application software (e.g. FORTRAN, SAS, SPSS, etc.) you should be sure you know how to use that software on bama.ua.edu or in a PC lab. For more information about software on bama.ua.edu, check the bama info page at http://bama.ua.edu/~unixinfo.

During Fall 1998 - The Computer Center will be looking at terminals (and PCs with terminal emulation cards) still attached to UA1VM. All of these terminals will have to be moved to a different controller or replaced by something on a network. Generally, if your Terminal ID starts with T10-something, you are attached to UA1VM. If your Terminal ID starts with T20-something, you do not have to move. If you use a SecurID card for access to administrative applications, or if you use a tn3270 program such as QWS3270, then you probably will not be affected by this change.

During Fall 1998 (date TBA) - the new calendar system on bama.ua.edu will be available. Official calendars will start to move from PROFS to the new calendar system. Watch for more information about the new calendar system. It is possible to view calendars on the new system with any standard browser, but some features are limited. To use all features, you will need calendar client software. If you already use the calendar client in Netscape Communicator Pro, you can continue to use that client. Otherwise, you will need to purchase Communicator Pro or the stand-alone calendar client software.

During Fall 1998 - if you have an official web page on UA1VM, you should obtain a replacement account on bama.ua.edu, and begin copying your web site to your new account, in preparation for the changeover of web service (see next item).

Christmas holiday, 1998 (date TBA) - the name UA1VM.UA.EDU will be moved to point to the same computer as bama.ua.edu. This means that mail addressed to an account on UA1VM will be sent to that account on bama.ua.edu (if it exists) or will be returned to sender. Web links to UA1VM.UA.EDU will go to the specified directory on bama.ua.edu instead. Mail forwarding from (the old) UA1VM will end. Web page service from (the old) UA1VM will end. However, the IBM computer which is presently known as UA1VM.UA.EDU will be given another name, and will still be available (for a few more months) to faculty, staff and students moving applications and tapes.

Computer Changes Made This Summer

Here are some of the events and computer changes that took place over the summer, in the continuing process of migrating computer use off of UA1VM. For more information about any of these changes, call the Helpdesk at 348-2435 (on campus UAHELP), or check the migration Web site. (Editor's note: The migration web site was removed during the fall 1999 semester.)

July 12, 1998 was the last day to use UA1VM for dialup authentication. To use the University's limited modem pool, you must use an account on bama.ua.edu or one of the departmental authentication servers to make the connection. Note: once you have made the connection, you can still access UA1VM as usual, to continue your migration efforts.

July 12 was the last day to use ns1.ua.edu for SMTP service. If you use Netscape, Internet Explorer, Eudora or a similar mail client for mail service, check your preferences and make sure that your SMTP (outgoing) mail server is set to bama.ua.edu, not to ns1.ua.edu or UA1VM.UA.EDU. If you use an ISP, you should use your ISP's SMTP server.

July 27, 1998 - Student accounts with no valid identification were deleted. If you think your account was deleted in error, take your current valid ACT card to the Helpdesk in A203 Gordon Palmer, and explain the problem. Files from old accounts can still be restored.
